It is with profound sadness that the Lincoln community, especially the Lincoln Homeless Coalition, shares the passing of Matt Martinosky, a dedicated advocate, outreach worker, and friend to many. Matt’s death leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him and a lasting legacy of compassion, service, and unwavering commitment to helping others.
The Lincoln Homeless Coalition expressed their grief: “It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of someone who meant a great deal to our Coalition. Matt Martinosky was a pillar of outreach and advocacy in our community and a long-time LHC member. During his time at CenterPointe, Matt helped launch the Alternate Response partnership with the Lincoln Police Department, a collaboration that sends CenterPointe’s outreach team on certain calls to ensure folks are met with support and compassion. His leadership and dedication were essential in shaping this effort and improving how our community responds to people in crisis.”
Matt’s influence extended far beyond this groundbreaking initiative. He played a key role in programs like Project Connect, outreach coordination, and the ongoing efforts of the Continuum of Care. But it was his genuine connections with individuals experiencing homelessness that truly defined his work.
Matt cared deeply for the people he served, fighting for their dignity and well-being. His outreach was driven by a heartfelt belief in the inherent worth of every person. “He built relationships, built trust, and eventually helped connect them with the services they needed,” said Matt Schur, a close friend and colleague. “He knew all the faces, all the names, and all the personalities that went with them. He was a resource, a guide, and a bridge builder between people and agencies.”
Schur shared a poignant reflection: “I don’t use the word ‘hero’ lightly, but this man was a hero. For years, he did street outreach with people experiencing homelessness, often being the first person they came in contact with. The world is a much better place because Matt was in it. The care and love he showed for the most vulnerable people in our city changed so many lives. His ripple effect will continue for a long, long time.”
In his own humorous way, Matt often joked about his relationship with “the man upstairs,” telling friends to “put in a good word for me.” Schur adds, “Matt, you didn’t need a good word from anyone. You literally did every single one of those things from the parable on a regular basis—often all in the same day. You, sir, were a sheep. I know you’d hate the metaphor (which is partly what makes it so deliciously beautiful), but that’s just how your life was oriented. You were a cranky sheep, but a sheep nonetheless.”
As the community mourns the loss of this remarkable man, his legacy remains woven into the fabric of Lincoln’s outreach and advocacy efforts. His compassion, dedication, and unwavering love for the vulnerable will continue to inspire all who knew him. Rest in peace, Matt. Your kindness and service made the world a better place. Your ripple effect will be felt for generations to come.
